The transportation of dangerous and sea-polluting substances by sea-carrying ships is regulated by International Convention for the Safety of the Life at Sea (SOLAS) and International Convention for the Prevention of pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

In the relevant sections of SOLAS and MARPOL, the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code (International Maritime Hazardous Substances Regulation) necessary regulations are explained in detail and they have taken the legal provision for the transportation of these substances by sea. As of January 1, 2004, IMDG Code has been made compulsory.

Tüm taşıma tipleri için (deniz, hava, tren, kara ve iç su yollarıyla taşıma) tehlikeli maddelerin sınıflandırılması ve risk tanımları da UNITED NATIONS Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN) tarafından yapılmaktadır.

CLASS 1
EXPLOSIVES
Their stacking on the ship should be made away from the staff area and the boat hull, just under the hatch covers.
Substances included in this class :
Black Gunpowder, Firecrackers, Smoke Bombs, Ammo, Dynamite etc.

CLASS 2
GASES
CLASS 2.1
FLAMMABLE GAS:It must be stacked away from all kinds of heat sources and personnel area.
Substances included in this class :
Acetylene, Ethane, Ethylene, Methane, Hydrogen, Lighter Gas etc.

CLASS 2.2
TOXIC GAS: It should be stacked away from all kinds of heat sources, personnel area and foodstuffs.
Substances included in this class:
Ammonia, Fluorine, Prussic Acid, Chlorite, Carbon monoxide etc.

CLASS 2.3
NON-FLAMMABLE COMPRESSED GASES
NON-FLAMMABLE COMPRESSED GAS :
Should be stored in a well-ventilated, cool place on the deck or under the deck. Tubes filled with these gases expand when they receive heat, which is very dangerous because it causes explosions.
Substances included in this class :
Argon, Helium, Carbon Dioxide, Air Gas, Oxygen etc.

CLASS 3
FLAMMABLE LIQUID
If flammable liquids heat up, they are divided into 3 groups according to the combustion point of the evaporated gas.

CLASS 3.1
GASOLINE : The combustion point is less than 18O C. It should always be stacked on the deck.
CLASS 3.2
FUEL : YThe rated point is between 18OC and 23OC. It must be stacked on or under the deck.
CLASS 3.3
FUEL : The combustion point is between 23OC and 61OC. It must be stacked under the deck.

CLASS 4
GASES
CLASS 4.1
FLAMMABLE SOLID : They must be stacked either on the deck or under the deck. They should be kept away from living quarters.
Substances included in this class :
Aluminum Powder, Celluloid, Naphthalene, Red Phosphorus, Films, Naphtha Oil, Dry Fibers etc.

CLASS 4.2
SOLIDLY BURNABLE SOLIDS
SPONTENOUSLY COMBUSTIBLE :
It should be stacked in well-ventilated areas, and stacking intervals should be created in a way to ensure air circulation.
Substances included in this class :
Kopra, Fish Meal, Dried Grass,, Charcoal etc.

CLASS 4.3
SOLIDS WHICH BURNS WHEN WATERED
(DANGEROUS WHEN WET :
When they come in contact with water or get wet, they are the solids that show burning feature. It should be kept in well-ventilated dry places and contact with water should be avoided absolutely.
Substances included in this class:
Alkaline alloys, Barium, Carbide, Ferro Silicon, Natrium, Magnesium etc.

CLASS 5
OXIDIZİNG SUBSTANCES
CLASS 5.1
OXIDIZING AGENT: Bu sınıfa giren maddeler, oksijen açığa çıkartmak suretiyle yanmayı kolaylaştırıcı bir ortam meydana getirirler. Bu özellikleri nedeniyle yanıcı maddelerin yanına istiflenmemelidirler.
Bu sınıfa dahil maddeler :
Nitrat, Suni Gübre, Amonyum Sülfat, Baryum Klorat vb.

CLASS 5.2
ORGANIC PEROXIDES
ORGANIC PEROXIDE :
Substances included in this class may be flammable or explosive. It should be placed in a dry and cool place, covered on the deck.
Substances included in this class:
All peroxides are included in this class.

CLASS 6
TOXIC
CLASS 6.1
TOXIC :Toxic substances can enter the human body by mouth and kill the person. For this reason, they should be stacked away from food, beverages, living quarters and substances that release moisture such as tobacco.
Substances included in this class :
Arsenic, Aniline, Barium Oxide, Phenol, Nicotine, Lead, Cyanide, Mercury products etc.

CLASS 6.2
BİYOLOJİK MATTER
INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCE :
These substances cause diseases because they contain microbes. They should be stacked away from food, beverage and living quarters. In dangerous situations, the nearest health authority should be informed.
Substances included in this class:
Bone, Bone Oil, Compressed Meat Waste, Animal Skin, Blood Powder, etc.

CLASS 7
RADIOACTIVE MATTER
These substances are transported in special containers. Containers must be absolutely undamaged. They should preferably be stacked on the deck, away from the staff, foodstuffs, unwashed films, medicines and chemicals. They are divided into 3 groups in terms of activity degrees.
